Visiting Professors
The Raine Medical Research Foundation has contributed more than $1.4m to facilitate the visit of distinguished, international scientists to The University of Western Australia since the commencement of the Scheme in 1971.
Nominations for Raine Visiting Professorships are invited each year in January with a six week lead-time and a closing date set around mid-March. Nominations are invited for the current and following year, however, as nominations are not considered until April/May at the first yearly meeting of the Research Committee, nominations for the current year would normally apply to a visit in the latter half of the year to allow reasonable lead time for planning and preparaton by the visiting scholar.

Background
From its inception the Raine Foundation has been mindful of the importance of collaborative research and in particular, the benefits of attracting leading overseas scholars to the University. The Raine Visiting Professors' Scheme was established in 1971 to encourage international scholars to spend up to three months at the University of WA. In 1997 this Scheme was supplemented with the introduction of Distinguished Visitors' Awards to facilitate shorter term visits to the University. Both these Schemes were a great success. In excess of 100 international scientists spent time at the University as Raine Visiting Professors between 1971 and 2001.
In 2002 when the academic structure of the University changed, Raine reviewed its Visiting Professorship Schemes to ensure that all Schools involved in medical research could continue to participate and, as a result, the two schemes were rationalised. The combined awards are based on the same principles as the 1971 and 1997 schemes - for the advancement of medical research - and they continue to be offered for the two categories of visitor: long-term and short-term.
Raine Visiting Professorships are offered subject to available funding.
The current round of Raine Visiting Professorship awards will be announced in early May 2013. The closing date is Tuesday, 2 April 2013.
